Cleary continuing family tradition

Wednesday, 24th September, 2014 8:02pm

Underage star Laura Cleary was the latest winner of the Cork City and County Youth Awards after captaining the Under 16 Cork team to All-Ireland success against Dublin last month.

Laura, who plays her club football with Éire Óg, was presented with her award at The Gresham Metropole Hotel, who sponsor the award scheme along with John Buckley Sports.

Laura played a pivotal role in the team's rise to success throughout the year and has previously won All-Irelands at Under 14 level; while this is her second at Under 16 level.

Her father John, who was honoured in Croke Park last Sunday along with the 1989 All-Ireland winning Cork team, coached the side alongside the management team of Theresa Meaney, Tom Scally, Aoife McCarthy, Charlie McLoughlin and John Fitzgerald.

Laura's aunt Nollaig Cleary will be chasing her ninth All-Ireland medal this Sunday in Croke Park when Cork encounter Dublin and was also present at Laura's award presentation; while her cousin Gráinne Cahalane, whose father is the legendary Niall Cahalane, was also a member of the winning Under 16 side.

Also present on the day were Deputy County Mayor Aindrias Moynihan and Deputy Lord Mayor Fergal Dennehy, city councillor Joe Kavanagh, as well as members of the Cleary family along with Laura's Cork teammates.
