Developed in the late Roman Empire as a luxurious item, glass is now a widespread commodity that can be found in every home, office, church and vehicle. Used to create light, colour and spatial effects, glass still retains its luxury roots, but now also counts practicality among its benefits.

With over 35 years experience in the industry, Michael Finn is well positioned to offer those seeking glazed galvanisation the best advice for whatever their whims and flights of fancy. In fact, it would be fair to say that Michael is thoroughly conversant with the many aspects of the glass business, having first served his time working with Hickey's and then Waters Munster Glass before eventually staking his acquired know-how on his own business venture.

Now 22 years in business, Michael and his enterprise, the family owned and run Northside Glass, is thriving. Having initially concentrated solely on glass cutting and glazing, Michael and co soon moved into the design and processing areas, providing bevelling, polishing and edging services. Under his astute guidance NSG have grown exponentially to become one of the countries leading glass and glazing companies with a state of the art factory on the Old Mallow Road and a one-stop-shop showroom at Pope's Quay in Cork's city centre.

From humble beginnings NSG's gradual expansion has seen Michael take on more and more staff, with the company now employing 27 staff at its duel operations. Assisted by his wife Kathleen, co-director, and his two sons Tony and Michael, NSG's success was recognised when the company attained its ISO Certification, " a testament", Michael feels, "to the high calibre of their dedicated workforce and to the high quality of customer care they offer".

Michael is particularly proud of NSG's large project portfolio in traditional glazing, fire rated glazing and balustrade systems. "The team," he says, "are capable of carrying out any glazing project required to the highest possible standards." One such product is the companies fire resistant glass, which has placed NSG at the forefront of such developments. "Years of experience in this area allows us to give the customer the best advice on how to surpass even the toughest of safety requirements."

Staying on the subject of safety and security, Michael says NSG are committed to delivering peace of mind with their glass. "Security is, regrettably, a high priority in today's world and our company has developed a full understanding of security and safety requirements for both the home and the workplace. Our specialised toughened, safety, laminated security and anti-bandit glass is designed to bring peace of mind."

NSG also stock a wide selection of mirrors from bevelled to tinted, and modern to antique, Of particular pride to Michael is the range of framed bevelled mirrors, which are laser etched with famous Cork scenes. Take for example the mirror depicting Shandon Steeple, one that is understandably hugely popular with both locals and visitors searching for that elusive unusual present for their loved ones."

From fragile mirrors to unbreakable polycarbonates and Perspex, NSG can also supply sheets cut to size. Perspex can be ordered in many different colours including mirror or reflective Perspex. And just as with all glass products, a cut-while-you-wait service is a special facility offered by NSG. Award winning designs and with many substantial national contracts under their collective belts, it seems, if you can forgive the pun, that for Northside Glass Ltd there is no glass ceiling and the sky really is the limit.
