Instead, at the age of 18, Christine headed for London having landed a scholarship for Quantity Surveying with Royal Life Insurance, a feat she admits to still having no idea how she achieved. “I enjoyed my time in London, as it was a great life experience, but within a year and a half, I knew my career choice wasn’t for me. So I returned to Macroom and eventually enrolled in Stiofain Naofa where I did a two-year course in Diploma (City & Guilds ) in Sport and Recreation. At last I was comfortable and happy.”

From there Christine went onto to teach fitness classes and gym instructing, in various facilities in Cork. Her passion for the industry grew further by climbing the career ladder front the gym floor to management, she says, as she took on more challenges in what she describes as a then “young industry”. “It was a great time and opportunity to be part of something different and it presented a lot of fresh challenges, because the leisure industry was so new. It was still growing at the time and, as a result, I never felt like I was just going to do any job where I would be bored or unfulfilled – leisure always felt like more to me.”

For Christine, the biggest change she has witness first hand since starting out 16 years ago has been the gradual education of the customer. “Customers are far more educated now and far more knowledgeable in what they want from a fitness facility. The customer service aspect is therefore much more demanding on the staff within the leisure industry”.

“In todays world people are just so busy with life challenges and needs and many don’t feel like they have the free leisure time anymore. It’s therefore up to Leisure Providers to make the solutions to make our services both accessible and affordable. It’s not good enough anymore to just provide a pool and treadmill. People want results and value for money. We recently completed work on our new 1.6 million development in Bishopstown, which, we hope, will make that solutions to the leisure & exercise barriers evident to our customers.

“LeisureWorld  aim is to create a children’s fitness and fun area that can really stimulate children, that will be fun but also have a real focus on movement, coordination, posture and balance and learning. Gymnastics, Art and Fitness Program’s will be on offer every week to enable parents and their children get fit together. Fitness must become a norm in life not the exception is it us up to us all to make the difference”
