Page 2 of 2 School services are also integral to Bus Éireann’s business in Cork and the company employs more than 70 drivers for the school bus service. As the school year draws to a close, so does the uptake of Bus Éireann’s popular tour service which includes half-day and full-day tours from Cork to places of interest including the Ring of Kerry, Moll’s Gap and the Burren. He said that while many of the existing services have benefited in recent years from increasing frequencies and new services, the challenge now for the company is to increase these frequencies and services even further, while keeping costs low, to encourage more and more people to avail of public transport in the future. Looking to the future, Mr Fitgerald said that the development of the Cork docklands will create huge opportunities for Bus Éireann in Cork and that people across the city and county could expect to see new routes and services introduced over the years ahead. One of these new services is the new Ballincollig town service which is expected to come into operation in the coming months and will see the start of a new bus service which will loop the town, bringing customers into the town centre and connecting them with the city service. Plans are also in place to increase the frequencies of services in commuter towns such as Carrigaline. Mr Fitzgerald said that these improvements would not be possible without continued investment and said that they were delighted with the additional investment from Transport 21. Concluding he said that Bus Éireann was delighted to continue to serve the people of Cork and would endeavour to continue to cater for Cork’s ever growing population.
