The recently held Cork Chamber Business Conference in association with the Institute of Bankers Southern region, highlighted the significant potential which exists in the Cork region for the focused and continued development of key sectors, as well as the requirement to encourage the growth of indigenous enterprise through increased partnership between business and third level institutions.

Opening the Conference Chamber President Joe Gantly stressed the need for a sustained and targeted development of the Cork region as the “key regional gateway” based on its natural competitive advantages in terms of scale and critical mass.

Commenting Mr Gantly said, “to move Cork forward and to remain competitive, we need a strong government with the conviction to deliver key projects such as the National Development Plan, Transport 21 and the National Spatial Strategy. Balanced regional development and support for the development of a counter balance to the east coast is a stated government priority. In this regard the Cork Docklands project represents a significant opportunity for government to implement and deliver on this commitment”.

“Cork airport is a key piece of regional infrastructure with significant economic development potential. There are increasing levels of frustration with the amount of time taken to resolve the debt issue. In addition, Government must now honour its commitment to the autonomy of the Airport through the unbundling from Dublin Airport Authority.”

Mr Gantly concluded by saying, “That the Chamber with its comprehensive and interconnected business network will continue to ensure that a well-informed view of the key issues affecting the region as a whole, remains a priority for all our elected representatives for action”.
