A new initiative to support the development of science and engineering skills has been launched by the Cork Chamber.

The initiative will see chamber member companies sponsor students who have chosen science and engineering programmes for the duration of their four-year degree course. Companies will also facilitate a period of work experience for students in their third year of study.

Brendan Keane, General Manager, FMC International and Chairman of the Chamber’s Science, Research and Innovation Committee (SRI) says, “The Committee believe the Cork region can become an innovation hub.  What better way to foster that than to support access to courses in University College Cork and the Cork Institute of Technology that focus on key skills and encourage innovation”.

Conor Healy, Chief Executive, Cork Chamber said, “It is important to encourage Cork companies to work with the institutes of education in the region. This focus on areas of science and engineering by the Chamber is a necessary one given the need to increase numbers of graduates in these disciplines for future growth and employment in the region. The Chamber has worked closely with the staff of the Access office in CIT and the UCC PLUS office who will undertake the administrative organisation of the bursaries and liaise with students and supporting companies”.

Companies supporting the scheme this year include RPS Consulting Engineers, EMC and Eli Lilly. Each company has committed to supporting a science or engineering student for the duration of their four-year degree course. Companies will also facilitate a period of work experience for students in their third year of study.

John Shalloe, Regional Director, RPS Consulting Engineers said “RPS are delighted to be involved with the Cork Chamber Bursary Scheme at Cork Institute of Technology. We see this as a positive contribution towards promoting the fields of engineering and science as a career choice for students through the interaction of the industry with the third level institutions”. Judith Macklin, Team Leader Environmental Compliance and Process Safety at Eli Lilly said, “Eli Lilly is very pleased to have this opportunity to sponsor a well deserving candidate and to support them throughout their undergraduate studies.

Specifically, we hope to create a strong link with the winner of the bursary and to help them through their studies in whatever way we can, including a work placement that will provide mutual benefits”.
