Cork exporters have been praised for the successful figures which saw a seven per cent increase in national exports for April to May this year. The figures, released by the Central Statistics Office, also showed that exports were at the same level as they were in May 2007. Considering current economic difficulties, Fianna Fáil Deputy Noel O' Flynn said Cork exporters deserved huge credit for their performance. He said, "Exporters throughout Cork and the country are having to use all their expertise and creativity to ensure that they can continue to do deals abroad. Not only are the global economic conditions putting pressure on international dealings, but the strength of the euro against the dollar and sterling is adding another hurdle to trade. Cork exporters have played their part in helping to deliver these national figures and they deserve great credit for their contribution." Deputy O' Flynn said he had spoken to many people involved in exporting who relayed to him the serious difficulties they face in the global marketplace. He said, "Obviously there is some time to go yet before the global economy gets back on track but if our exporters continue their excellent work they will be well positioned to take advantage of any economic upturns. That will benefit not only them but the Irish economy as a whole." |
