Cork’s marine and aquaculture sectors were well represented again at this year’s BioFach 2008, the world’s leading organic trade fair, held in Nuremberg, Germany recently.

Three of Ireland’s pioneering seaweed products manufacturers, as well as a leading producer of Irish organic salmon, and a salmon smokehouse, participated in the fair with the support of Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM). Among them were Marigot Limited of Carrigaline, who, since 1992, have been at the forefront of marine multi-mineral technology and innovation.

Jason Whooley, Chief Executive Officer of BIM said, “As such it is a particularly valuable opportunity to showcase these leaders in the Irish seafood and aquaculture sectors. This is our fourth year to attend the fair. Last year’s event was highly successful and we continue to see growth in demand for Irish organic produce internationally, with trade visitors here very interested in organic produce coming from the ideally situated coast of Ireland”.

Complementing the presence of the Irish organic seafood industry were three Irish seaweed companies exhibiting their produce for human and animal nutrition and speciality horticulture. The products being showcased included calcium supplements, antacids and specialist fertilisers targeted at fruit and vegetable growers as well as the sports turf market, such as golf course proprietors.

In addition, one of Ireland’s foremost salmon smoke houses, Irish Seaspray Ltd,  also exhibited and showcased their range of smoked salmon products and specialities.
