Three teams from UCC's master's course in Business Information Systems recently presented new software which has the potential to change emergency units, sudden cardiac death levels and bed sore management.

Team Vital Technology Solutions developed a wireless sensor patient monitoring system named V-Sense? The system records and monitors a patient's heart-rate, blood pressure, blood oxygen level and body temperature. It then sends this information to a central workstation where the user can view the patient's vital signs in real time, combined with personal details and medical history. This could prove highly worthwhile in critical medical environments such as the Intensive Care Unit and Accident and Emergency.

Team SenIT Solutions created a programme named ProCG. This software monitors heart rhythms and allows for quick, painless and cost-effective remote heart screening. This screening process has the potential to reduce the large numbers of people dying from Sudden Cardiac Death in Ireland.

Team Com4Care developed the software system Acumat. This will assist in bedsore prevention through the use of multiple pressure sensors. These sensors will alert healthcare professionals when to turn patients thus reducing and preventing bed sores.

While all the projects are still in the early stages, feedback from the healthcare industry has been positive. The students presented their work at the Annual BIS Innovative Software Showcase finale yesterday at UCC.
