Page 1 of 2 One of the unusual traits of a recession is the upturn in the fortunes of franchise businesses. While the economy at large contracts, franchises often blossom, partly because consumers have become so brand conscious, and partly because these businesses offer competitive pricing in a measured and controlled business environment, a good mix for both consumers and owners alike. This is particularly true of the fast-food franchise industry. At a time when restaurants are literally pricing themselves out of business and weekly supermarket bills soar, is it any wonder many are forsaking nights of wining and dining on the town in favour of a quiet night in with a takeaway? Fast food for slow economic times indeed. The worlds largest pizza restaurant and delivery company, Pizza Hut has experienced this notable growth in recent times. That growth is about to become even more apparent here as the company plots a course to become the largest pizza operator in Ireland, having acquired the Godfather's Pizza Franchise in April 2008. Since its takeover, previous Godfather's Pizza stores have converted to the new PHQ by Pizza Hut branding, with a further 40 new outlets already planned for the immediate future, 5 of which are planned for the Cork area. The PHQ by Pizza Hut brand is owned by Yum! Restaurants International and its expansion in Ireland is part of the parent company's international strategy to increase its footprint in as many markets as possible. In 2007, Yum! Restaurants International generated more than $10 billion in sales through it various brands (which also includes KFC and Taco Bell among others). It is, in every sense, a global success story and one that offers an extensive and tested formula to operate successfully within an established network. From a potential franchisee's point of view, this is a fantastic chance to join a winning team and benefit from their proven business success. |
