A Cork firm is in line for a prestigious national award. Glanmire based logistics business, O'Connell Group, has been short listed for the Small Firms Association (SFA) National Small Business Award 2010. It is one of six Irish companies in the Environmental Sustainability category. "This award is testimony to all the hard work of our employees and in particular our management team," said Eddie O'Connell, Group Managing Director.

"It is great recognition that all types of companies can reduce in tandem their Carbon footprint and running costs."

With over 746,000 square feet of warehousing, O'Connell Group is a major provider of chilled and frozen storage and thus are big consumers of electricity, however Warehousing Manager Bosco Creed said: "Changes in work practices and pricing structures meant we were able to reduce our consumption significantly and our spend by approximately 40 per cent. Therefore we saved on emissions and running costs."

General Manager, Paddy O'Sullivan, said: "With a large fleet of trucks we constantly monitor fuel consumption by vehicle. Right now we are trialling a tracker system that allows us to see in real time vehicle speeds and idling. This will give the transport department the information on how long each vehicle is idling and so help to improve driving styles of individual drivers. Through this, we are aiming to further reduce diesel consumption."

Awards Patron, An Taoiseach, Brian Cowen TD will present the awards, to all category winners and the overall winner at a gala event on Thursday 4 March.
