William O’Brien (Jnr) has bought out the remaining family shareholders of William O’Brien Plant Hire and now holds 100% of the business.

This follows the announcement in February 2007 that William O’Brien Plant Hire had appointed Merrion Capital in Cork to manage the sale of its plant hire business. Commenting William O’Brien Jnr said, “I am delighted to be keeping the business in family ownership. This is a superb business, with first rate management and staff, market leading positions and great prospects for the future.

“We aim to continue the strong growth trajectory of recent years through ongoing investment and innovation. The Company has recently purchased land in Little Island, Cork, where we aim to build a group head office and state of the art maintenance facilities for our fleet of 68 vehicles. This follows an investment of €9 million in new equipment in the past two years with a further €7 million worth of equipment currently on order,” Mr O’Brien said.

Previously a minority shareholder, William O’Brien Junior has been Managing Director of the business since 1999. The company is the number one crane hire and number two concrete-pumping firm in Ireland.

Employing eighty staff it has operations in Cork, Limerick and Waterford. The company provided the cranes used to install flood lighting at Croke Park, using the largest mobile self-erecting tower crane in Europe and the only one of its kind operating in Ireland. In 2005, Wm O’Brien Plant Hire was the first crane hire and concrete pumping firm in Europe to be awarded the OHSAS 18001 safety standard.
