The Commissions Annual Report has shown that 2007 had the lowest industrial relations dispute figures on record, with just 6,000 days (6 disputes) recorded. The report also showed that 80% of disputes referred to the Commission were resolved by it and involved the aviation, transport, financial, pharmaceutical, retail and health sectors. Another notable feature was the record increase in employment rights referrals which numbered over 9,000 - a 26% increase on 2006. The launch of yesterday's (Wednesday, July 30) report also marked 20 years of the Social Partnership Model, which had brought some major success to Ireland and has made a major contribution towards transforming its economy and society. The Chief Executive of the LRC Kieran Mulvey said the findings of the most recent report underlines what a significant year 2007 was for industrial relations in Ireland, while also expressing his hope that the current review of "Towards 2016" would produce a positive result for all parties. Mr Mulvey called on both the representatives of employers and employees to assist the Commission in processing the high level of referrals by seeking less adjournments and by co-operating with the scheduling arrangements. Unnecessary delays were being encountered by the unavailability of the parties on the days assigned for hearings and by last minute objections or requests for rescheduling. The Commission anticipates over 10,000 referrals on employment rights/ grievances to its Rights Commissioner Service in 2008. |
