The call comes as increasing concerns are being voiced about the danger of misusing these drugs. According to Cork GP, Dr Ronan Boland, while antibiotics are important in treating bacterial infections, they have also been misused by using them to treat things like a flu or virus. "Many infections are due to viruses that will not respond to antibiotics. If a patient or parent is worried about themselves or their children they should see their GP. It is vital that patients and doctors work together to reduce the number of unnecessary antibiotics being prescribed," he said.
