While many people are more than happy to convince themselves that prostitution is an option taken up as a last resort by those existing in small pockets of our country where poverty is rampant, this is far from the case.
The reality is that women of all ages, creeds, nationalities and social classes living in towns and even rural communities in Cork continue to engage in prostitution.
A quick internet search reveals that there are now hundreds of women in Ireland - many of whom live in Cork or are willing to travel here - who are offering these services. In fact there is so much information available about these unfortunate girls and their services online , that one really has to question how they are managing to trade at all? One could be forgiven for thinking that these women were unwise to advertise their services and contact details online, while one would also imagine that punters might be fearful to contact them for fear of entrapment by some clever ‘operation’ to uncover users of the sex industry. However, such fears and concerns do not exist (nor, it seems, ‘operations’) and instead the number of websites offering services of a sexual nature survive in what seems to be a safe place.
It seems if people are really serious about clamping down on prostitution and the brutal trafficking of innocent women into this country, then this is an issue that can no longer be ignored and it is now time for the public and politicians alike to stop turning a blind eye to the growing prostitution trade in Cork. |
