College is not all about study as we saw last week as CIT held their The Award Ceremony at Oriel House in Ballincollig. The Student Awards ceremony was initiated to highlight societies and individual members who have made an outstanding contribution to extra-curricular life at CIT. At the ceremony, Dr Brendan Murphy, President of CIT, presented members from each Society with Certificates of Merit. Dr Murphy acknowledged the contribution made by Societies to the overall experience of student life, "while applying oneself to one's studies is extremely important, involvement with societies contributes to the development of the whole person." Dr Murphy continued, "Participation helps to develop skills which are sought after by potential employers, for instance, communication skills, team playing and initiative." Special Guest, Alan Shortt, himself a Graduate of CIT, presented the main awards. In all twelve awards were presented, Seven Individual Awards and Five Group Awards. Mervyn O'Mahony, CIT Societies Officer said he was pleased that CIT has a chance to honour those who contribute so much to CIT within Societies across all four campuses. "We have a wonderful student scene here at CIT with Societies that range from Course-Based such as Mechanical Engineering to College-Wide Societies such as Music & Film." CIT has Forty Two Student Societies and the importance of Student Societies, as a source of enjoyment, enlightenment and opportunity for like-minded individuals to get together, is recognised every year at this Awards Ceremony. |
