Adult Literacy Awareness Week E-mail

People across cork will this week mark adult literacy awareness week. The aim of this week is to raise awareness of adult basic education issues in Ireland and inform individuals about the benefits of brushing up on their reading, writing and maths skills.

While there are currently 45,000 people availing of basic educational support around the country, there are still many people living with difficulty in these areas. In the last OECD survey it was estimated that one in four Irish adults have problems with even the simplest task such as reading instructions on a bottle of aspirin.

Most adults with low literacy skills can read something but find it hard to understand official forms and instructions. Some will have left school confident about their reading and numeracy skills but find that changes in their workplace and everyday life make their skills inadequate.

Throughout the week members of the general public can drop into local Adult Basic Education Centre to find out more about the learning services that are available to them. This free service provides tuition, on a one-to-one or small group basis in an informal setting. Anyone who would like to find out more information can ring Free Phone 1800 40 41 41 and arrange a chat or a meeting in any of the Adult Basic Education Centres in Ballincollig, Carrigaline, Dunmanway, Kinsale or Macroom.
