Cork's MEPs are calling on second level pupils in Cork to enter this year's public speaking competition for transition year students.

The competition which is being run again this year by the National Forum On Europe in partnership with all the Irish Members of the European Parliament, is designed to give students the opportunity to develop important personal, social and educational skills while gaining a better understanding of Europe.

The overall theme this year will be 'eYou = Your Vision for the Future of Europe'. However, teams are not expected to be experts on the European Union. In fact , no prior knowledge of the EU is required before entering the competition. The Forum will provide students with a resource pack to guide their research.

Regional heats are being held in every European Parliament constituency, leading to regional finals and culminating in a national final in Dublin Castle on March 2, 2009.

South MEPs Brian Crowley, Colm Burke and Kathy Sinnott are urging students to enter the competition which has become one of the most popular in the country. Last year alone, a hundred and fifty schools took part with the assistance of local coordinators, nominated by MEPs.

The national winners will enjoy a four-day all expenses paid trip to Strasbourg and surrounding area for their classmates and teachers. The lucky students will also have the chance to participate in a pan-European youth Forum in the European Parliament chamber.

The closing date for receipt of entries is Friday September 19. For more information log on to on www.forumoneurope.ie.
