Two secondary schools in Cork are taking part in a ground breaking, new maths pilot aimed at revolutionising the way mathematics is taught at second-level.

Scoil Mhuire in Kanturk and St Patrick's College on Gardiner's Hill are among 24 secondary schools across the country which have introduced Project Maths in their classrooms.

The pilot has been especially designed to make maths more relevant to students and their everyday lives and in turn promote greater maths literacy among students and help ensure a higher uptake of honours level maths for the Leaving Certificate. It's envisaged that the pilot will be rolled out completely in September 2010.

The Minister for Education and Science, Batt O'Keeffe TD visited Scoil Mhuire in Kanturk recently to officially launch the pilot. Speaking at the launch the Minister said, "This model of curriculum reform has never been used before. It will allow us to trial the changes and, at the same time, develop lesson plans and exemplars for teachers.

"It will enable us to ensure that the optimum level of resources are available before Project Mathis is main streamed in September 2010.

"The new model will allow the student experience - central to effective learning - to feed into the final syllabus development so that we can ensure relevance and quality in the new reforms."
