New extension to Canovee National School Opened

Minister for Education and Science, Batt OKeeffe T.D. has opened a new extension at Canovee National School, Carrigadrohid, in Macroom, County Cork.

The extension provides the school which caters for over 110 pupils with a new classroom, a computer room, a staff room and a new assembly hall. Funding of over €700,000 was provided by the Department of Education and Science towards the extension under the Small Schools Initiative.

Speaking to pupils, teachers, parents and the wider community, Minister O'Keeffe said "I am delighted to be here with you today to celebrate the opening of this fine extension to Canovee National School. The new accommodation marks an important milestone in the life of the school which first opened in 1842.  Since then the school has developed an excellent reputation as one in which each student is motivated and encouraged to develop their full potential and is provided with a broad and balanced education."

Highlighting the school's success in athletics and sports, Minister O'Keeffe continued saying "Canovee National School has a proud history of involvement in sports, particularly our native games. Your record in Sciath na Scol is indeed legendary and many former pupils have gone on to represent their club and county at national level.

The school can also be justifiably proud of the success of the local club who this year won the All Ireland Junior Football Final in Croke Park, as many of the players began their football careers playing for the school. Your success as a school both in the classroom and in the sporting arena is a tribute to the commitment and dedication of the teachers here."

Minister O'Keeffe went on to say that the Government remains committed to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to access quality education in comfortable surroundings. Since 1998, over €140million has been spent on primary school buildings in Cork.

Minister O'Keeffe congratulated school principal, Eddie Moloney, the teachers and other school staff along with the students and parents and wished all of them continued success.
