Two reports published by the National Adult Literacy Agency, "Exploring Assessment for Accountability Purposes in Adult Literacy" and "Guidelines for the New Definitions for the VEC Adult Literacy Returns."

Have been launched at the closing event of the 2007 National Adult Literacy Awareness Week. This year's theme was "The Benefits of Learning", which aimed to encourage adults to return to learning by promoting the benefits of improving their literacy and raising awareness of adult literacy services available throughout the country.

NALAW will be accompanied by a TV awareness campaign about adult literacy in Ireland and will be supported by the National Adult Literacy Association (NALA) free phone number.

The first publication 'Exploring Assessment for Accountability Purposes in Adult Literacy' examines the process of recording progress for adult literacy learners, considers the consistency of approach to the initial assessment of learners and makes recommendations on the reporting of adult literacy activity and progress via Vocational Education Committee returns. The second publication 'Guidelines for the New Level Definitions for the VEC Adult Literacy Returns' sets out guidelines for defining three new literacy assessment levels which are being introduced into the VEC adult literacy
returns in 2008.

Minister Haughey said at the launch, "We now have a new series of adult literacy targets set out in the Social Partnership Agreement and I have no doubt that these will be met with great success. However, it is crucial that we are able to measure and assess our own methods of meeting these targets and the success of our policy approach. This is the main objective of the two publications I am officially launching here today."
