University College Cork has just announced details of the introduction of a new part-time BSc Environmental Management Honours Degree programme at the college. This new degree aims to provide an understanding of, and practical training in, all aspects of the environment that will be directly relevant to potential employers. Over 14 departments at the university are involved in this multi-disciplinary programme with topics ranging from chemical, biological, earth science and engineering aspects of the environment to social, economic, legal and health aspects. Modules are taught using a combination of lectures, laboratory and field practicals, site visits and field excursions. Guest lecturers and site visits enable students to see how industry, local authorities and other organizations respond to environmental issues and take individual or collective responsibility for their actions. Employment prospects may be in the areas of environmental consultancy, industry, local authorities, agriculture & forestry, education, Government departments or the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Lectures will commence on September 2, 2008 running for three hours (7.00-10.00pm) each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, finishing in May with a short break at Christmas and Easter. Entry is open to students who reached 21 years of age on or before January 1, 2008.
