Details have just been announced of a new PhD Scholars Programme in Cancer Biology at University College Cork.

The programme is one of four structured-PhD training programmes in Ireland that were funded by the Health Research Board in 2007 and this is the first dedicated PhD-training programme in Cancer Biology to be established in Ireland. The PhD Scholars Programme will train eighteen Scholars in Cancer Biology over the next seven years with the first five Scholars beginning their studies this month.

Cancer is a major health issue world-wide, and cancer research is a high priority in modern science. UCC has a large interdisciplinary research cluster in cancer biology that includes investigators from the College of Science, Engineering and Food Science and the College of Medicine and Health.

To mark the launch of the new PhD programme, the UCC Cancer Biology community will host a Mini-Symposium on Friday, October 3 in Brookfield Health Sciences Complex G02 at 2.30pm. The Cancer Biology Mini-Symposium will feature presentations from three distinguished, internationally-recognised, cancer researchers: Scott Lowe, Karen Keeshan, and Corrado Santoconale. Attendance at the Cancer Biology Mini-Symposium at UCC is free and open to all.
