Discussions about the future of Ballygarvan National School have progressed very positively and it now appears that the school will be able to continue to cater to the needs of children in the area into the coming years. Just last month the Principle of the school was forced to tell local parents that there are no school places for their children next September in the same month that 140 residential units was granted planning permission in the same small village

However, discussions between the Department of Education and the Diocese of Cork & Ross about the future of the school have progressed very positively and it's now likely that it will be possible to purchase a new site for the school.

The move has been welcomed by local TD Deirdre Clune who has continued to lobby for a new school for the area. "This progress is a step back from the brink, and should allow the school to cater for all students who have enrolled for next September and September 2010.

"I welcome this development as it will give some degree of certainty to the long-overdue school project in Ballygarvan," she said.

The TD urged Minister Batt O'Keeffe to act immediately to appoint a design team for the development and give a commitment to building the school without any further delay.
