The Minister for Lifelong Learning, Seán Haughey, TD, has launched a new innovative television series entitled Written Off? The new series, which is a venture by the National Adult Literacy Agency (NALA), focuses on the real life experiences of learners returning to education - the challenges they faced, their courage and enthusiasm and their great achievement of successfully completing the courses, with the coveted accreditation achieved by all who took part. The series demonstrates that learners of all ages, and from all walks of life, can succeed in improving their education levels once the right encouragement and opportunities are provided. Speaking at the launch, Minister Haughey said "this is a great day for all learners but in particular for all eleven learners who took part in this marvellous new venture. It took huge courage and determination to participate and complete the series. "The journey undertaken by each, clearly demonstrates the growth and development achieved, not only by the learners themselves, but also the effects on their families, friends, the wider community and society generally. It is clear that education is as much about what happens outside the classroom as inside it." Minister Haughey went on to say "this is evidence that Lifelong Learning has now become a very important issue and this is as it should be." Minister Haughey also commended NALA for its work on the successful completion of this innovative undertaking. "Your great expertise in the area of adult literacy and basic education has ensured the success of many initiatives which have made a huge difference in the lives of those who have taken part. No doubt Written Off? will be equally successful," said Minister Haughey. In conclusion, Minister Haughey said "by sharing your experiences, from the series, you will inspire others to avail of the ever increasing opportunities in the Further Education and Adult Education sector." |
