This is a powerful story, which combines a classic murder story with political plots that involve Muslim extremists and the Catholic ring wing in the Spanish city of Seville. It is the third novel by Robert Wilson that features the Spanish detective Javier Falcon. In 'The Hidden Assassins' Falcon has to investigate a mysterious murder and at the same time an explosion that demolished a block of flats in another part of the city. Are they connected? With the bombing the investigation is problematic from the start because there's a Mosque at the bottom of the block and the investigation immediately focuses on the Muslims who worship there. Were they constructing the bomb? Were they set up to look like they were up to something? Were they the target? Were they part of a bigger conspiracy? There are several groups in play: intelligence services that may have been investigating the mosque, a right wing political party from the Andalucía region that sees its popularity growing, a major multinational with a mysterious agenda. Anything is possible. In the novel we also acquire insights into how the Spanish judicial system works, the rise of political nationalism in the face of increasing Muslim presence in Seville, realistic characters where complex characters are presented with flaws as well as heroic virtues. All in all, a terrific read. Author Robert Wilson is the author of eight thrillers, including 'A Small Death in Lisbon', 'The Silent and the Damned' and 'The Blind Man of Seville'. He is a past winner of the Best Novel of the Year award from the British Crime Writers' Association. |
