Ever since Joanna Newsom waltzed onto the scene with her harp and set about combining pop, avant-garde experimentation, folk and traditional rhythms, to generally stunning effects, there's been a slew of like-minded classically trained female songstresses with squeaky voices following in her petit footsteps. Anni Rossi is one such squeaky soul - she's been described as a lot of things - including a cross between PJ Harvey and Paula Abdul - but don't let that particularly bizarre amalgamation colour your opinion. The 22 year old Minnesota native is certainly a strange musical proposition though - some might even say an acquired taste. But if the likes of Bjork and Newsome tickle your taste-buds then Rossi is definitely worth your attention. Armed with a viola and a voice that is impish, full of wide-eyed wonder and barley contained exuberance, Anni's breathy and swooping yelps and growls put her in close proximity to Sugarcubes-era Bjork, while her plucked viola is rooted in free-ish, folk-ish roots music with a heightened sense of pop. Currently signed to 4AD, and with Steve Albini behind the console on her upcoming debut record, Rossi comes to Cork six months later then previously expected (she was booked in the summer to play, but a big tour Stateside put the halters on that). She's going to make it this time to the Whiskey on Sunday, October 12. Support comes from Rollin Hunt. |
