A mainstay on the British psych, drone and free-folk scene, Glasgow's Ben Reynolds is perhaps best know for his contributions to the mesmerizing experimental rough-cut droners Vibracathedral Orchestra and flailing, psychedelic noise beasts Ashtray Navigations. Lately he has been seen touring as part the curious, but unquestionably talented cabaret-esque Baby Dee's 'all-star' backing band alongside Hush Arbor and Andrew WK among others. Reynolds has also been doing the rounds with Current 93 where his playing style has found the perfect home in David Tibet's slowly unfolding apocalyptical folk, poetic laments, hypnotic religious chanting, epic string-laden oeuvres and majestically explosive drones. When flying solo, as on his most recent solo album, Two Wings, Reynolds retreats from the deep psychedelic mire more readily associated with Vibracathedral Orchestra, Ash Nav and Sunroof! to reveal a player possessed of a delicate touch and remarkable dexterity in much the same vein as pioneering Primitive exploratory guitarist John Fahey and fellow fingerpicking contemporaries James Blackshaw and, in particular, Jack Rose. Gently wringing mesmerizing and elegant swarms of melodies from his six strings, Reynolds heavily raga-influenced playing also encompasses sparse droning repetition, dark, elemental and primitive blues as well as improvised sound manipulations. Joining Reynolds on the bill is Dublin's Cian Nugent, recently seen down this way supporting James Blackshaw. Nugent's own exploratory and expansive playing style is rooted in pre-war blues, Appalachian string bands and more traditional forms of drone. Cian will share the stage with the 'Wicker Mummy' herself, Vicky Langan, formerly of Cork's free-form collective Eachtra and now part of the art psyche ensemble United Bible Studies. Expect all manner of transcendental happenings when this triple threat comes to the Whiskey on Tuesday, June 17. |
