Corcadorca will create the setting for the eight scenes of The Hairy Ape within a series of warehouses and have promised a highly visual promenade production from Monday, June 23 until Saturday, July 5. The weird, the wired and the wonderfully oddOne of Cork's most innovative production companies, Hammergrin return to the festival with the ambitious K: The Iowa Project, following on from their previous successes with The Threat of Humour and Trying Jokes. There's mind reading machines, US Government Agents, Philip K Dick references, national literally codes and counterspies and it's all happening at the Old Distillery, North Mall from Sunday, June 22 until Saturday, June 28. This years Midsummer festival is coloured a distinctly environmentally-friendly shade of green and so, it should come of no surprise to learn that among the attractions is a human-powered fairground. Sensazione (Youghal Town Centre from Thursday, June 19 – Sunday, June 22 and Mardyke Walk from Thursday, June 26 until Sunday, June 29) is a high-octane carnival that's a cross between a night at the circus and the thrill of the funfair, where all the customised fairground rides all made from recycled materials. The festival finale, which this year takes place at the Cork Docklands blurs the lines between art and industry, technology and theatre, the circus and circuitry. Robodock is like nothing you have ever seen before, a spectacular indoor techno-park brimming with life-size robots, robotic theatre shows and amazing industrial installations suitable for all ages. The whole of Robodock is spectacularly designed from recycled scrap metal and other industrial waste products, and features among its 'preformers' a contemporary Don Quixote armed with roses, pyrotechnic gadgets and a tantalising whiff of razzmatazz, a giantic Robohand, big enough to crush a car, a completely life-like robo-homeless machine and a bicycle that you can actually turn somersaults in. Other noteworthy events include the urban culture clash hodgepodge of You've Got To Love Dancing To Stick To It as well as the elaborate nude-shoot of famed photographer Spencer Tunick. Check the Midsummer website for more details on all events (www.corkmidsummer.com). |
