Copenhagen trio Marvins Revolt top a quadrupletastic line-up of skinny, angular, complex, gurn -worthy post-hardcore this week that is guaranteed to have you throwing shapes and pulling faces, marvelling at the audacious displays of musical dexterity. Starting out as a quartet in 2002, Marvins Revolt released their noisy and aggressive first record in 2004.
They played shows in just about every town in Denmark and the music developed into the more complex sound of their debut album, Fell in Love with Tanks & Satellites, released in 2006. Shedding one member, the newly streamlined trio, rather then curb their more intricate tendencies, accentuated their multifaceted post-hardcore noise further, adding a more melodic side to the mix, the results of which can be heard on their new record Killec, released on the impressive new Irish DIY label, Popular Records. Label mates Adebisi Shank join them on their Irish tour, and expectations will be high for a band that has already floored Cork audiences in a succession of killer shows. They make the kind of dizzying technical, instrumental hard-core that so many attempt but few succeed at nailing. Frenetic and at times fragmented, the Shank’s musical abilities allow them to drop into freefall, with all three members playing from a different page before coming out at the other end stronger, heavier and more grooving then ever.
Think Faraquet and Shellac and turn up the volume. Promising local newcomers Private Underground Residence and Sea Area add their own spice to the mix. It’s all going down tonight, Thursday, October 18 at Fred Zepplins, so get there early to reserve some space. |
