In JRR Tolkien's novel The Lord of the Rings, Gorgoroth is a dead plateau of evil and darkness in the land of Mordor! On Saturday, November 22 the mountains of Mordor will be shifted towards the Crusicin Lan and the Cork venue plunged into a seething pit of gloom when the aptly named Gorgoroth unleash their tormented black-metal plague on the masses.

The Norwegian troupe are among the most highly regarded and infamous exports from the vibrant Nordic black-metal scene. Formed in 1992, the band has gone through innumerable line-up changes but their mission statement has remained the same - "to perpetrate sonic and spiritual violence upon the world in order to bring forth change in peoples perception of being therein" – so you know they mean business.

Along the way, Gorgoroth have encountered their fair share of controversy and have the obligatory jail term under their studded belts. Band members openly insist their music is primarily a catalyst to aid anti-Christian sentiment, criticizing those who listen to their music without sharing such ideology. Frontman Gaahl has also been referred to as "the most despised man in Norway", following a series of violent convictions, including a stint served for the prolonged six-hour torture of a man in their homeland. But throughout the band has continued to write and record their bleak and punishing take on black metal, earning them a place alongside trendsetters Mayhem and Emperor in the hearts and minds of extreme music fans. Cork metal fans will no doubt be glad to have an opportunity to witness them tear flesh once again this coming Saturday, November 22.
