It´s been called one of Ireland´s greatest plays from one of Ireland´s greatest playwrights -but strip away the hyperbole and you´ll find Juno and the Paycock continuing to resonate with audiences today the length and breadth of the country.

Civil War and families were divided by the Treaty, the play throws open a window onto our nations recent past.  It is a riveting blend of comedy and tragedy that exposes the appalling conditions in Dublin´s stifling tenements, but also their prevailing spirit and sense of community.

Juno tells the story of the Boyle family who live in a cramped two-roomed tenement building in Dublin. Jack Boyle is the self-styled 'Captain' of the play who avoids work by skiving in Foley´s snug with his friend and side-kick Joxer Daly. Jack´s wife Juno is the breadwinner and moral powerhouse, although she can´t stop her life unravelling as she is surrounded by a family that doesn´t deserve her.

Johnny, their son, is a moral weakling who spends his time watching his back. Mary, their daughter, has delusions of grandeur and a belief that she is destined for a better life. A distant relative dies and a solicitor brings news that they are about to come into money And so, the comedy and the tragedy of this O´Casey masterpiece unfold. This epic production comes to the Cork Opera House from Tuesday, October 28 until Friday, October 31.
