Azimuth represented my melodic side years ago, which still is intact today My musical influences are clearly evident in any of my albums, which happen to be more on the music side. I find that to still be the same today. Azimuth is still relevant in many ways, because of the musicality. The minimal sound doesn’t really do much for me, but of my desire for whatever music I play or make to have as a main ingredient, melodic content. That’s not to say I don’t appreciate it, or respect it. To each his own…

You’ve been quite vocal in the past about techno’s limitations? Do you still feel the genre has somehow painted itself into a corner? Your own releases this decade under the Dark Comedy alias have seen you mine older musical forms such as funk, jazz and blues in a more direct manner then your previous output, while still operating within the confines of electronic music – is this your way of saying techno and electro need to ‘mature’ or would you prefer to not be associated with techno any longer?

Techno isn’t limiting to me, it just got boring, in the way that I was making it. And in addition to the tons of other “techno”, that I felt lacked vision, uniqueness, etc., I chose to do that with the dark comedy album. It’s my interpretation of the older music forms that were so close to me growing up. An electronic interpretation.

What does your current set consist of? DJ’ing? Dark Comedy material? Old-school techno records from the early to mid 90s?
Any and all that is funky!!

How’s the comedy career going? I believe you are looking to pursue a career in acting if it takes off for you? You’ve also stated your preference for comedy as a performance art to music, or rather the satisfaction derived from a successful stand up show is greater then the satisfaction you get from a good DJ set – given the choice would you pack the music in if the opportunity presented itself, or will music always be something you pursue in some shape or form?

One day I will be able to make a living with comedy/acting. But, that time hasn’t arrived yet. The preference for comedy, and the satisfaction is totally different from dj’ing. When I dj, I usually play OTHER peoples records, and you get the crowd reaction. With comedy, I tell jokes written by ME, and the payoff is huge if the whole room laughs. Which is a much deeper satisfaction.

Kenny Larkin plays Electric Underground at the Liquid Lounge on Friday, February 15.
