He’s been hailed as the Frank Zappa of country music, so where Kinky Friedman is involved, you know it’s going to be a love/hate thing. The son of University of Texas professor, Kinky studied psychology at Texas where he formed his first band King Arthur & the Carrots, a group that poked fun at surf music and recorded only one single in 1966.

After graduation, Friedman served three years in the Peace Corps, before going on to form a succession of groups notable for their decidedly un-PC names (Kinky Friedman & the Texas Jewboys and Little Jewford among others), before getting his break in 1973 the Texas Jewboys debut album, Sold American.

Since then Friedman has released a number of satirically fuelled left-field country albums, written extensively for the likes of Rolling Stone magazine, penned as many as 19 mystery novels, founded the Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch where he lends his time and support to taking in and caring for stray, abused, homeless or aging animals, as well as put himself in the running for the position of Texas Governor. He’s also beent he subject of a tribute album featuring the likes of Willie Nelson, Tom Waits and Lyle Lovett underlining just how much respect he commands as a musician. He plays the Cork Opera House on Sunday, May 25.
