Ed Handley and Andy Turner are veritable stalwarts of the UK’s distinguished electronic music scene. Friends since the early 80s, the duo have worked together for the past 20 years in some of the most forward thinking and influential electronic musical acts that the British isles has ever produced
As members of both Plaid and Black Dog they have contributed enormously to the Warp Record heritage, stretching as far back as the seminal Artificial Intelligence compilation days, which gave an early indication as to just how important this label would be in years to come. As frequent early collaborators to Bjork they have helped push electronic music, and more specifically techno out of the clubs and fields into a more mainstream public conscience.
They were there when the first wave of Detroit techno hit along with the arrival of acid house in the UK. Being part of a breakdancing crew they were close enough to feel the seismic shift when it all started to change and rather then bust moves, they decided to create grooves. Techno left an indelible effect on Ed and Andy, and they have continued over the course of the last twenty years to modify their own template. After they parted ways from the influential Black Dog Productions, in the immediate wake of the post-techno days, they soon returned under the Plaid name and immediately picked up where they had left off with BDP. The sleek and lush sounds of Derek May are as much a part of the Plaid sound as their contemporaries in the IDM scene. Theirs is a sound that considers techno history, where it has been, and how it came to be – by turns fragile and sweeping and yet also hard-hitting and eminently dance-floor worthy Plaid, having gradually refined the sound of early techno and given it a modern overhaul. Recent Plaid happenings include the duo taking on soundtrack work on various projects, the reissuing a Black Dog album and remixing Bats For Lashes. It’s also Ed and Andy’s 20th anniversary so expect a new Plaid album in the very near future, They play the Crane Lane on Thursday, June 5.
