Page 1 of 2 CloverfieldWhat's the story? Let me set you the scene: There's a party happening in New York. Someone's filming the shindig on shakeycam. Suddenly there's an explosion. Cue pandemonium. Ohmyf**kinggod, the Statue of Liberty has been decapitated and there's the head on the street. Ahhhhhhhhh, more shakeycam with lots of people running and screaming….ahhhhhhhhhhhh…whatthef**k ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. End transmission. Eh, who's party is…No idea, sorry. Didn't recognize a single soul anywhere in the chaos. I'm lost??? You and me both. But then again where JJ Abrams, creator of Lost, is involved you know confusion is going to reign supreme. Considering the success of Lost, which has, for three seasons now, maintained high audience ratings despite nobody knowing what's going on, it comes as no surprise that this untitled movie, scheduled for release in 2008, but subject to change, is getting a whole lot of internet buzz despite having no title, big name stars or even a discernable plot line in the one trailer that is circulating on the net. The rumour is that it's got something to do with a monster attacking New York. Either way, the buzz surrounding the short clip is sure to make this one of the most eagerly awaited films over the coming months / year. Sin City 2What's the story? Following on from the stunning success that was Sin City, Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez continue to adapt Miller's graphic novels, this time with the second book 'A Dame to Kill For', an earlier story of Dwight McCarthy (Clive Owen's character), whose life is turned upside down when Ava, a woman from his past returns, saying she loves him and causing all sorts of problems for him. Uh-oh! Who's onboard (for all their sins)? Brittany Murphy, Mickey Rourke (yeah), Michael Clarke Duncan and Michael Madsen. I have a confession to make: I'm already bursting with excitement (it's a gory and bloody display of affection I can assure you), at the prospect of another Sin City session. Rodriguez is on fire at the moment and nobody does pulp like him. This should be another contender for movie-event of the year. Deadly sins indeed! The Dark KnightWhat's the story? Batman got a critical reboot in 2005 courtesy of Memento director Christopher Nolan and American Psycho's Christian Bale. The duo combined vision was so successful it almost rid the collective memory the Dark Knights last horrid and turgid outings on screen when Clooney and Arnie reduced the Marvel comic book hero to a unintentional laughable parody. Nolan and Bale somehow managed to resurrect and revive the corpse by re-imagining the Batman saga and injecting it with a dose of grounded reality and giving Bruce Wayne the necessary background to explain his Batman exploits. Now they return to face his iconic nemesis The Joker. Naturally expectations are sky-high! Well, don't leave us in the dark, who's filling Jack Nicholson's shoes? Well, as we've already said, Nolan returns to the directors seat while Bale takes on the Batman role once again. They're joined by a host of characters also returning from 2005's movie including Gary Oldman as Lieutenant James Gordon, Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth, Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox and Cillian Murphy as Dr Jonathan Crane / Scarecrow. The role of the Joker is to be played by Heath Ledger (Brokeback Mountain), while Maggie Gyllenhaal takes over from Katie Holmes. Heath Ledger? You're joking, right? Nope! Early press shots however of Ledger in his get up certainly look impressive and, in keeping with Nolan's vision of re-imagining the Batman brand, is considerably removed from the previous flamboyancy of Nicholson's Joker. An early six-minute trailer, purported to be the films opening scenes, was leaked a few weeks back and shows the psychotic nature of Ledger's Joker. A definite blockbuster in the making! |
