In one regard, writing about the crazy collective that is Sunburned Hand of the Man is a pointless exercise, a lesson in music journo futility, a soon-to-be-doomed attempt to adequately and accurately describe/pigeon-hole (delete as applicable) a group who's entire ethos is to embrace and expand upon the very notion of chaos and unpredictability. But there's a page that needs filing here so here goes: With an ever revolving cast that at one time or another can include anyone from occasional Six Organs of Admittance collaborator and southern folkie Hush Arbour to one-man drum orchestra Chris Corsano, their sound is ever changing. Originally from Boston, Massachusetts, Sunburned Hand of the Man rose from the ashes of psychedelic punk trio Shit Spangled Banner in 1997. Since then the band has released well over 50 records on official CD's and limited edition CDR's, many of which are documents of their famed anything-can-and-will-go live show. Their compulsive desire to not only document but also make available their on-going creative endeavours is equalled only by their desire to keep moving in new musical directions. A evening in the company of Sunburned Hand of the Man can leave audiences exposed to varying degrees of afro-beat, lounge-funk, snake-charmer rock & roll, doom-metal, free-form jazz, dub, drone, trance, psychedelic and punk, sometimes all within the same song. Although it's anyone's guess what Sunburned Hand of the Man turn up in Cork at Cyprus Avenue on Tuesday, June 24, a knee's-up hootenanny of rave-like proportions is guaranteed. Yo, let it flow now mama! |
