"We had a great reaction to the show during Cork Midsummer Festival. I think these characters and their plight resonate well with an Irish audience, who recognise elements of themselves and their families in the relationships and situations depicted. I have re-written elements of the play that I felt needed work since the summer and we will be adapting many aspects of the production to suit The Granary theatre space which is very different from the Unitarian Church where the play premiered. And what of the challenge of working opposite just one actor? "I think it is a challenge for two actors to be responsible for carrying a play. You have to have the stamina necessary to fulfil the arc of the play without the aid of other characters and subplots. I think though, that as long as there is even one other actor on stage with you, with whom you work well, you support each other, so it's a very different experience to what it would be to do a one woman / man show. Finally, a question on Theatre Makers, the new company who are responsible for the production. What can people expect? Theatre Makers is a new company, founded by Jack Healy, which undertakes to explore and build on the organic needs for the theatrical, the dramatic and the narrative that are innate to the dynamic of the human spirit. The Working Actors' Workshop, one aspect of the company, through which this play came into being is dedicated to giving Cork based actors the opportunity to gain a little more autonomy than is generally afforded to them by the conventional casting system. The workshop is an opportunity to create, devise and explore new work, beginning the process with the actor rather than with a formal director, writer or producer." They Never Froze Walt Disney runs at the Granary Theatre from Monday, January 7 until Saturday, January 12. |
