Videohippos come straight out of the same Wham City neighborhood that's already given us the madcap electro-cartoon-composer Dan Deacon. But, while there are some similarities between the two camps, most notably in their shared fondness for lo-fi electro manipulations and a dedication to highly visualized live-performances, the truth is Videohippos and Dan Deacon are coming from different musical plains. Whereby Dan is your only man for insatiable good time party vibes, Videohippos opt for a more messy, psychedelic garage-rock ambiance. Drum machines do battle with a flesh-and-blood drummer, a guitarist plucks wiry melodies and fragmented chords on a toy axe, gas-mask microphones are hollered into, the resulting voices sounding at once child-like and innocent and also sinister, while att the time old kids cartoon footage beams onto the band/canvas – it's all par and parcel of this two-pieces distinctly chaotic live-experience. The band themselves call their music 'Happycore', but there's a certain glumness hidden under sheets of lo-fi noise, whitewashes of treated sound and spazzed indie-pop guitars that gives the music a heightened emotional oomph, and makes their experience all the more tangible. Support on the night comes from our own Ten Past Seven, the free-wheeling, caterwauling instrumental trio who've been quiet on the gigging front of late. It's a Ping Pong show so that means you'll be heading for the Liquid Lounge on Saturday, June 28. |
