Sowing the seeds for a great year in Douglas

Wednesday, 6th February, 2019 4:48pm

Douglas Tidy Towns have hit the ground running in 2019, kicking the year off with a big event in January.

Saturday 19 January saw the official opening of Independence Park in Douglas. Those in attendance included the Lord Mayor of Cork Mick Finn and representatives of the Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil, Sinn Féin and Labour parties.

The event was organised by Douglas Tidy Towns to mark the centenary of the first Dáil Eireann, the Declaration of Irish Independence by the first Dáil and the beginning of the War of Independence, all of which took place on 21 January 1919.

The event included the unveiling of a monument containing an inscription of the Declaration of Irish Independence and music by members of the Carrigaline Pipe Band.

There were speeches by the Chairman of Douglas Tidy Towns Shane O’Callaghan, former runaí of the Kilmichael and Crossbarry Commemoration Committee Seán Kelleher and An Tánaiste Simon Coveney TD.

A wreath was then laid at the monument by the Treasurer of Douglas Tidy Towns, Sheila Fitzgerald.

Founded in 2000, Douglas Tidy Towns works continuously for the betterment of their local area.

The group meets every Saturday at 10.30am at the Community Centre on Church Road. New members are always welcome. Find out more information on their Facebook page.
