There are prizes for best projects but the key focus of the Discover Cork: Schools' Heritage Project is on the motivation, inspiration, leadership and self-development of the student and the forging of identity and sense of place. How can we think about, understand, appreciate, resolve and make relevant in today's society the role of our cultural heritage in our modern world for students or upcoming citizens. Every school in the city and county has been circulated the project brochure. The project is open to primary and secondary school students. The project is also a vital opportunity for historical societies across Cork City and County, who may be thinking about pursuing a project in their local school to approach their local school and start a project with a class. Application forms can be got from me at 087 655 3399 or downloaded from lifetimelab.ie (d) Adult Education CourseMy interest in Cork City's history remains strong. My work in the Lee Valley has led me to create new methodologies in how to look at how communities grow and survive and I look forward to returning home from my journeys but there is still so much to see and write about out there in the beautiful Lee Valley. However, as part of my continued interest and commitment in promoting the city's heritage, I have organised an adult education course in Ballincollig Community School, entitled "Our City, Our Town An Introduction to Cork History"; It comprises six weeks made up of three slide talks and three walking tours. The talks will take place at the school on Tuesday evenings and the walking tours on Sunday afternoons. So if you ever wanted to know more about your city developed. Contact the school at 021 4871740 to book a space. Classes begin on Tuesday 22 September 2008. (e) Our City, Our Town, Inniscarra ParishAs part of the Our City, Our Town, I am presently field working through Inniscarra Parish and will in the New Year travel through the south bank of Inniscarra Reservoir (Canovee and Farren side). Many of the area's I hope to travel through I have no prior knowledge of who would be willing to chat and elaborate upon my research. Many of the people in recent months profiled are found through fieldwork, referrals and people contacting me. So any contacts in the latter areas that you would deem helpful to my study would be appreciated. I am indebted recently to the many people I met and chatted to at Inniscarra Agricultural Show, who I will be profiling in time. So much to see and so much to do! Many thanks to all for your help and continued support. I hope to see you the reader at one of the latter events! Back to the Lee Scheme next week… |
