Caring for your real Christmas tree

Wednesday, 6th December, 2017 6:00pm

It is time to choose your real Christmas tree!

Real Christmas trees offer the refreshing scent and vibrant colour of evergreens that have been newly harvested. It brings outdoors into your home and the fragrance is second to none.

Choosing the right tree

The best is the Abies Nordmanniana, also known as the Nordman Fir. They are wonderfully symmetrical in shape with a glossy emerald green colour but best of all, they are soft to touch and non-shed.

What size?

This all depends on the height of your room. You need to subtract the height of your stand and if you have a tree topper, consider this too. Then consider the width you need to give the tree once indoors, as a live tree’s branches will relax and open.

Allow enough space when siting the tree for the lowest branches to fall open and not get in the way of foot traffic.

Get the tree in water immediately

Once you get your tree home, put it into water as soon as possible, within eight hours. The first thing I recommend doing is to put a cut in the trunk an inch or two off the bottom, and put it in a tree stand filled with water.

Use the right stand

The stand should comfortably fit the diameter of the trunk. Whittling the trunk down will only dry the tree out faster.

Keep it cool

Heat dries out trees, so keep your tree away from fireplaces, heat vents or even direct sunlight.

Remember to switch off

As magical as it may be to come home to a sparkling tree, don’t leave the tree lights on overnight or when no one’s in the house.

How many lights?

Start at the base of the trunk and work your way up, wrapping lights around every major branch, moving from the trunk to the tip and back. The rule of thumb when decorating your tree is 100 for every foot.

Please remember to always check your lights before you put them on the tree, there is nothing worse than having to start again.

For the best quality real tree, ask one of our team at Griffins, Dripsey to choose the right tree for your room.

This Saturday and Sunday enjoy caroling at Griffins in Dripsey.
