Beautiful centrepieces for your Christmas pots

Wednesday, 21st November, 2018 3:56pm

Margaret Griffin

Once we've decked our homes with magical Christmas decorations, we should stand outside and look at how we can add some colour to out patios and doors.

Create a perfect pot with a centrepiece shrub with white cyclamen and ivy. These are lovely shrubs that will bring fragrance and colour to your pots.

If you would like height, go for a standard bay leaf, holly or Pyramid Buxus. Add some battery operated lights and you have instant elegance at your front door!

Pyramid Buxus

The popular Buxus Pyramid is an ideal evergreen for Christmas displays with many homes in Cork using these Christmas tree shaped plants as a festive feature by decorating with lights. Many people see the Buxus Pyramid as the perfect outdoor plant to decorate for the festive season.

It is a shrub that will look well 12 months of the year. I love to add a little extra colour in the pot by underplanting with cyclamen.

Holly

I love the Blue Maid. It is a female variety of blue holly. It produces an abundance of tiny, white flowers in spring that are followed by an abundance of attractive berries in winter. They are bright red and glossy.

Bay Tree

Laurus Nobilis is an aromatic evergreen tree or large shrub with green, glossy leaves. Bay leaves are used in cooking to add depth of flavour to soups and sauces. It is a very classical standard that will thrive in a sheltered position.

Lower shrubs:

Gaultheria

This creeping minature shrub grows to six inches, with scalloped or bristly toothed, glossy, dark green leaves. Its foliage has a strong wintergreen scent when crushed.

It has urn-shaped white or pale pink flowers that appear in summer and mature into aromatic scarlet fruit that often persists into the following spring.

It is a very easy shrub to grow if you want something small and dainty and looking well all year round.

Helleborus

Hellebores (sometimes known as the Christmas or lenten rose) are perennial garden plants with elegant flowers, perfect for brightening up shady areas during late winter and early spring. Some species are grown for their striking evergreen architectural foliage.

The Helleborus Christmas Carol is a new variety with an abundance of flowers and a longer flowering season.
