IRISH chiropractors are changing the way they work and are taking advantage of a new technology which is taking the world by storm called the activator.

Although relatively new in the Irish market , the activator was first developed in the US in the late 60s. It works by delivering a small impulse to the spine to gently move the vertebrae. The method is gaining popularity among those who are apprehensive about being treated using the manual 'twist and crack' approach (also known as the 'diversified' technique).

Cork based chiropractor, Dr Benjamin Martin of Ballincollig Chiropractic is one of a small number of Irish chiropractors who is qualified to use the activator.  He says that  the advances in technology have made a huge difference in how he approaches his job."Many people who come to me are nervous about being treated using the diversified method and are delighted that today´s technology, backed up by years of research, provides them with an alternative. This gentle low force method of adjusting the spine and joints of the body is considered to be one of the safest techniques in use today. The accuracy and light force of the instrument mean that Activator Methods adjustments are suitable for all patients, ranging from babies, children and pregnant women, to athletes and senior citizens," he said.

While there are still just a limited number of chiropractors who use the activator in Ireland, Dr Ben Martin believes that the activator is becoming the new face of chiropractic care in this country. "Activator chiropractics has been steadily increasing in popularity across Europe, the United States, Canada and Australia over the last twenty years. Ireland is now catching up with a method of biomechanical treatment that has helped people in other parts of the world for many years," he said.
