A Cork GP is calling on patients across the city and county to reduce their use of antibiotics. The call comes as increasing concerns are being voiced about the danger of misusing these drugs. According to Cork GP, Dr Ronan Boland, while antibiotics are important in treating bacterial infections, they have also been misused by using them to treat things like a flu or virus. "Many infections are due to viruses that will not respond to antibiotics. If a patient or parent is worried about themselves or their children they should see their GP. It is vital that patients and doctors work together to reduce the number of unnecessary antibiotics being prescribed," he said.

Dr Boland's comments came as the HSE launched a three week awareness campaign to highlight the importance of using antibiotics properly.

It's hoped that the campaign will raise awareness of the facts that misuse of antibiotics only causes bacteria to become resistant to antibiotic treatments and that taking antibiotics when they are not needed puts your health and your family's health at risk.
