A pilot patient programme running in Cork for people with type 2 diabetes was recognised at the Health Service (HSE) Achievement Awards last week.

The self-management patient education programme which is running in Charleville, Skibbereen and Mallow in conjunction with local general practitioners was set up in response to the increased prevalence of type 2 diabetes globally which was causing concern to health services, in terms of service provision, cost implications and patient morbidity.

Since its establishment the programme has had very positive results, helping to improve the health of the patients using it as well as increasing their overall control over their diabetes with one local user commenting that since the programme has been established they are learning new skills every week to help manage their diabetes and also to manage their foods.

At a special ceremony last week, the project received an HSE Achievement Award from the HSE South in the reconfiguration, major changes to existing approaches category.

Accepting the award for the programme, at a ceremony in University College Cork last week community dietician manager, Freda Horan said "the community dieticians are delighted with the recognition of their efforts but that the ultimate satisfaction is seeing the benefits the new programme is having on people with diabetes."
