| Health professionals attend Maritime Medicine Conference |

More than 150 delegates came together in Cork recently to attend a conference aimed at raising awareness of the maritime environment and its hazards. The Irish Maritime Medicine Conference, which is the first of its kind in Ireland was organised by the Health Service Executive in conjunction with Medico Cork, Ireland's only designated radio medical consultation centre and the Irish Coast Guard. The event was attended by a wide-range of health professionals such as emergency medicine consultants, paramedics, gp's, occupational health doctors, nurses, divers, ambulance personnel, fire service personnel, gardaí, Irish Naval Service, Irish Coast Guard and HSE staff who heard about the latest advances in the field of maritime medicine. A number of keynote speakers were present at the event including Surgeon Admiral Frank Golden, RnRetd who provided a general overview of the physiological problems associated with immersion, Mr Badiul Alam, Lecturer in Nautical Studies, NMCI who spoke about maritime disaster preparedness, crowd and crisis management and Prof Gerard Bury, Irish Underwater Council who spoke about diving hazards. Commenting on the conference, Dr. Stephen Cusack, Director of Emergency Medicine, Cork University Hospital said, "Cork is Ireland's maritime capital having the national maritime college, the Irish naval Service and Medico Cork based in this city. This conference will mark further development of this strong maritime tradition." |
