Question: I’d like to shed a few pounds but my cravings for sugary foods keep getting the better of me. Is there anything that might help?

Answer: John Philpott and his team at Here’s Health says, The whole of Ireland may be diet-crazy at the moment but I’m afraid there are no instant solutions. Moderate but regular exercise is the key to a healthy lifestyle as it speeds up the rate at which your body breaks down fat, so try to grab at least 20 minutes a day.

Diet is also important; you should try to avoid foods with a high fat content such as red meat, full fat dairy produce and most processed foods. Chicken and fish are good substitutes. If sweet foods are your biggest downfall then there is a supplement that might help with your cravings. Glucose Tolerance Factor (GTF) Chromium helps to maintain balanced blood sugar by interacting with insulin.

When you eat something sweet your blood sugar levels rise quickly, triggering a release of insulin to help bring them back to normal.

The trouble is, insulin does this job rather too well and you’re left with a blood sugar level that’s lower than normal. This produces feelings of weakness, fatigue, and cravings for sweet foods to combat the sugar low - and so the sugar cycle continues.

GTF Chromium helps to regulate the uptake of sugar or glucose into cells, which helps to keep sugar highs and lows, and consequently cravings, to a minimum. Higher Nature’s True Food GTF Chromium is one of the richest food sources of organic GTF Chromium and is often a popular choice. For further information ask at your local health shop.
