Older people across Cork are being advised to keep warm and keep well this winter. The call comes as the Health Service Executive (HSE) launch a new booklet aimed at older people which offers advice on how to stay in the best health during the winter months. The booklet highlights how the cold weather can present itself as a problem for many peeople, particularly older people, people with a disability and those with long-term illness. It advises that people should do their best to keep well during the winter months by eating healthy meals, keeping active and keeping their home warm. The book also provides information about the flu injection, the free electricity, gas and fuel allowances and how to keep the home safe and secure. Commenting on the publication of the new advice booklet, Gerry O' Dwyer, Chairperson of the Local Implementation Team for the HSE Winter Initiative said, "The information is available to enable people to help themselves. A few important steps can make a big difference between people staying well and becoming ill over the winter. We're trying to encourage people and families with elderly relatives to follow the advice and tips contained in the pack to stay warm and healthy. Our goal with this information campaign is to help people stay warm and healthy in their own homes and reduce those risks. The campaign provides information on keeping warm and a key message for the public is to be a good neighbour, be aware and check on your neighbours and older relatives. Do not leave it to others – they may have left it to you." People can order a Keep Well This Winter booklet by telephoning the Winter Information Line on 1850 24 1850, the booklets is also accessible online on www.hse.ie |
