Cork artists go ungrounded

Wednesday, 22nd August, 2018 4:34pm

An exhibition showcasing how artists respond to new environments is set to open this week.

Ungrounded runs from Friday and will show off the work of several artists who have changed studios or done exchanges, and how it affected their work.

Previews begin for tonight at 6pm at Studio 12 at the Backwater Artists Group (BAG) on Wandesford Quay.

Many artists are attracted to the idea of putting themselves in a different environment in order to generate new work and ideas. The opportunity to do this often comes in the form of artist residencies or studio exchanges. There are many different models and approaches to both, and Ungrounded looks at five examples of such projects undertaken by members of Backwater Artists Group.

Curated by Éilis Ní Fhaoláin, the exhibition features artwork, testimonies and documentation by six artists: Conall Carey (Highland Print Studio, Scotland), Fiona Kelly (Ratamo Centre, Finland), Éilis Ní Fhaoláin and Eimear Kavanagh (Road Studios, Liverpool /BAG), Ben Reilly (GLOGAUAIR Studios, Berlin) and Darn Thorn (Struts Gallery, Canada).

Ungrounded previews tonight at 6pm and runs from 24 August to 21 September.
